Music
Music plays a large part in the worship life of Community Church. The music program is one of the church’s major draws, held in high regard by the membership. The Chancel Choir, composed of 18 singers, is one of the finest small church choirs in the region. Minister of Music/Organist Rodger Whitten has led the program for the past seventeen years.
Each of the soloist/section leaders in the choir maintain active solo and teaching careers, and bring a wealth of musical experience to the choir. The soloists are soprano Heather Calvete, mezzo-soprano Susan Ali, tenor Christopher Campbell, and baritone Alan Crawley. The volunteer core of the choir consists of first-rate musicians in each voice part.
The Chancel Choir has produced several CDs in past years, and released a new Christmas CD in December of 2006.. The recording features the choir, soloists, strings, rhythm section, oboe, harp, flute, and – of course – Rodger Whitten at the piano and organ.
The support for good music is a constant at Community Church. As most churches move almost exclusively toward contemporary praise music, our program – while diverse in content - is mostly ‘classical sacred’ in style. Our goal is to present as high a musical offering to God as possible each and every Sunday. Our sanctuary is a wonderful acoustical space in which to sing/play, and we offer several special musical events during the year. The Music Committee, headed by chairperson Carol Hoppe, ably oversees the music program.
We would invite you to come enjoy the musical ‘fruits of our labors’ here at Community Church on any Sunday, where the musicians and the music are integral parts of our faith family.
